Composite Fermions in Fractional Quantum Hall Systems

چکیده

The composite Fermion (CF) picture offers a simple intuitive way of understanding many of the surprising properties of a strongly interacting twodimensional electron fluid in a large magnetic field. The simple way in which the mean field CF picture describes the low lying bands of angular momentum multiplets for any value of the applied magnetic field is illustrated and compared with the results of exact numerical diagonalization of small systems. The justification of the success of the CF approach is discussed in some detail, and a CF hierarchy picture of the incompressible quantum fluid states is introduced. The CF picture is used to understand the energy spectrum and photoluminescence of systems containing both electrons and valence band holes.

Fractional quantum Hall effect and Wigner crystal of interacting composite fermions.

In two-dimensional electron systems confined to GaAs quantum wells, as a function of either tilting the sample in a magnetic field or increasing density, we observe multiple spin-polarization transitions of the fractional quantum Hall states at filling factors ν=4/5 and 5/7. The number of observed transitions provides evidence that these are fractional quantum Hall states of interacting two-flu...

We construct a new representation of composite fermion wave functions in the lowest Landau level which enables Monte Carlo computations at arbitrary filling factors for a fairly large number of composite fermions, thus clearing the way toward a more detailed quantitative investigation of the fractional quantum Hall effect. As an illustrative application, thermodynamic estimates for the transpor...

Second Generation of Composite Fermions and the Self-Similarity of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

A recently developed model of interacting composite fermions, is used to investigate different composite-fermion phases. Their interaction potential allows for the formation of both solid and new quantum-liquid phases, which are interpreted in terms of second-generation composite fermions and which may be responsible for the fractional quantum Hall states observed at unusual filling factors, su...

Structures for interacting composite fermions: Stripes, bubbles, and fractional quantum Hall effect

Much of the present day qualitative phenomenology of the fractional quantum Hall effect can be understood by neglecting the interactions between composite fermions altogether. For example, the fractional quantum Hall effect at n5n/(2pn61) corresponds to filled composite-fermion Landau levels, and the compressible state at n51/2p to the Fermi sea of composite fermions. Away from these filling fa...

Characterization of fractional-quantum-Hall-effect quasiparticles

Composite fermions in a partially filled quasi-Landau level may be viewed as quasielectrons of the underlying fractional quantum Hall state, suggesting that a quasielectron is simply a dressed electron, as often is true in other interacting electron systems, and as a result has the same intrinsic charge and exchange statistics as an electron. This paper discusses how this result is reconciled w...
